Dart Villas B&B, Totnes - out and about in South Devon

map of A38 Exeter Plymouth Totnes South DevonThe ancient and characterful market town of Totnes is in the heart of the South Hams, South Devon – an area of outstanding natural beauty in the south-west of England. There's a wide variety of attractions nearby to suit all tastes, many of which are easily reached by public transport as well as by car.

Historic Totnes
Totnes, one of the many jewels of the South Hams, is a lovely Elizabethan market town. The ruins of its motte and bailey castle overlook much of Totnes including the steep and characterful Fore St which passes under the famous clock tower gateway on its way down to the Plains, the tranquil and shady Vire Island, and the river Dart.

As well as the unique and the interesting markets that take place every Friday and Saturday, Totnes boasts an unusually high proportion of privately owned and very individual shops selling everything from designer clothes, hand-made soaps and cosmetics, hand-made shoes, local arts and crafts to interesting ethnic gifts from all over the world. There are also many individual cafés and restaurants offering a wide choice of cuisine, as well as the chance to slow down and 'chill out' Totnes style and watch the world go by.

The surrounding area
South Devon is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful areas of the United Kingdom with just too many lovely beaches to mention. The coast between Exeter and Plymouth is truly spectacular offering a wide variety of settings - secluded coves, craggy cliff walks, wide sandy estuaries - even as local residents we keep finding new enchanting places to explore, and we'll be happy to let you into some 'local secrets'.

There are also the more family-orientated beaches and other attractions of the English Riviera towns such as Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. Cinemas, theatres, Paignton Zoo and the water park at Goodrington Sands are less than 10 miles from Totnes.

The Dartmoor National Park, with its rugged untouched landscape, wild ponies and abundant wildlife makes many a peaceful but awe-inspiring day out. For the more active visitor it also provides the perfect environment for horse riding, mountain biking, kayaking, climbing, caving and other outdoor activities.

Historic buildings and gardens
The South Hams, Teignbridge and South Devon in general has many National Trust and English Heritage treasures on offer as well many local museums and some fine churches. Buckfast Abbey is just 6 miles away.

Too much to mention!
Totnes and South Devon offers a warm welcome to visitors and has many other tourist attractions to offer, including two Steam Railways, Buckfastleigh Butterfly Farm and Otter Sanctuary, Paington Zoo and riverboat trips from Totnes Steamer Quay to the historic naval town Dartmouth. The cities of Plymouth and Exeter are less than an hour's drive and offer a whole new wealth of interest and entertainment. There really is too much to mention!

If you wish we'll be only too happy to help you plan your perfect days out!
